Make good use of debris left after the winter season. Mixed with prunings and weeds, they form perfect compost manure with a lot of ingredients that crops love. Preparing compost in your backyard farm is a sure way to recycle important organic matter in your backyard garden. Today, I will show you how to make a DIY pallet compost bin in your backyard farm.
Materials you need
You need four pallets of matching size or cut them to size to make a pallet compost bin.
You can use old pallets with the label IPPC or EPAL logo and letters HT, which shows pallets were heat treated, unlike the label MB which means the pallets have been treated with Methyl Bromide which is toxic and can leach into the compost.
Use four corner brackets to join the pallets together and screw them with a screwdriver. Cut the front pallets into half and hinged to form a pallet door. You will use a saw to cut the pallets into two.
Other people used netting mesh around the compost to secure stray compost content in place. This is not a must though.
How to build a pallet compost bin
Join three pallets together and screw them together. Make the height of the two walls flush with the rear wall. Screw with the brackets to make them sturdy.
Make the fourth pallet to a door to make filling the compost easy. Now attach the walls and the compost bit is ready to use. You screw in additional brackets to make it more sturdy.
How to use a pallet compost bin
Fill the compost with dried leaves and fressh green materials. Ensure a balance between brown and green matter in your compost bin to speeed up decomposition. You can add more compost bin along the first one with time.
If you have three compost bin in your garden, you can have the first one as active bay where you can add new materials. Then fill the middle one and leave it to rot. For the third one, it should have ready to use compost.
Having multi bay compost bin negates the need to turn compost material every few weeks. But turning compost in a bin helps aerate the bin and speed up composting.
