Looking at all the flowers I planted myself in my home garden and room balcony, the sudden urge of growing some vegetables came into my mind. I had already made enough space there; but, I could not get enough time to grow. Anyway this May I started this experiment. The choice of vegetable was made when my mother was cutting ginger for lunch; meanwhile, I searched a bit on how to regrow ginger, thanks to the internet. And then, it all begins.
The very first thing that I did was to educate myself about this thing. Being home I wanted to make use of all the things that I had available at home; whether it was soil, pot, ginger, or ground, I did not want to go to nurseries. Amazingly, I grew my ginger without stepping outside. See how easy it is to regrow ginger.
I am sure you must have a few questions related to how to regrow ginger at home like;
- How to grow ginger in pots?
- Can you plant ginger roots from the grocery store?
- How to grow ginger in cold climates?
Important Stuff To Know
I can assure you before telling this thing that most of the people do not know is that rhizome has eyes. Yes, I was also surprised by this fact. Before explaining this let me tell you what rhizomes are; the pieces of ginger found in markets or grocery stores are called rhizomes. Now coming back to the eyes part; they are the small white growths at the end of it. Be very careful to look for them. Make sure to collect such ginger or rhizomes from the market, if you are looking to regrow them.
So the very first thing you have to do is to wake up the rhizome back to its life by keeping it in lukewarm water so it can hydrate well; also, take care of the environment around it. It must be tropical, hot, and humid. Before we get to the how to regrow ginger part, start by immersing rhizomes in a bowl of lukewarm water for almost 24 hours so it can rehydrate completely. Now let me answer the above-mentioned questions one by one.
How to grow ginger in pots?
Once you are done with the hydrating part, now it’s time to plant it. If you do not have a big ground to grow ginger then you can do it in a pot too. As it was my first trial of growing any vegetable at home, I started with pot because of the two main reasons, first I did not have enough knowledge of its roots growing so I did not want to risk my other plant’s roots and secondly I wanted to make my first trial separately cause I had to take care and observe its weather demands.
So, how to grow ginger in pots, for this you have to fill the pot with well moist soil till its bottom, now plant the rhizomes in the surface and cover it with soil, you can keep eyes uncovered on the surface and place it at a warm, sunny place. Make sure your pot is big enough that it does not trouble ginger while growing. Also, do not let its soil dries up completely, keep watering it.
You can also use fertilizer personally, I used fertilizer for its healthy growth just like I use for my other plants. Now you are done with the planting part, all you have to do further is wait and care for the pot. But here the wait is quite long as for my ginger plant, it took me a month to see a tiny piece of the green stalk to break through the earth. After this, take care of your plant, water it religiously till the harvest time comes.
Can you plant ginger roots from the grocery store?
When I had my first ginger the very first question my friends out of amazing asked me can you plant ginger roots from the grocery store? Because they were thinking that I bought it from some nursery and plant it. when I answered them with a YES, a friend mockingly said, if it so then why grocery stores do not have ginger planted at their walls, how come they do not know this trick as it will save their money spent on importing gingers.
Then I shared the waking up part of rhizome with them as I did with you all. When it comes to re-growing ginger bought from a grocery store, make sure to choose ginger with a bud or stem sticking out of the main part of the tuber, now soak it overnight, and plant it in any big pot of your choice. Take care of the soil; if all process will go well, rhizomes produced their double size in return.
How to grow ginger in cold climates?
As I already told you all my experience of growing vegetables started in May; eventually, the growth part was done during summers and everything went fine. During my whole research on growing ginger, I learned that I can grow in any weather; summer, or winter. The mine summer experience is in front of you all and to answer how to grow ginger in cold climates, I am going to try this during cold climate; because, I admit that it would be really nice to go pick some fresh ginger in January, to make myself a good curry!
